Thinking of having a patio put in the backyard or a slab of concrete for a spa or garden shed. These can be large jobs to tackle as a homeowner, especially if you haven’t done this type of work before. There are a lot of tools needed for a job like this. I would suggest doing a simple walkway if you want to learn first, its not real wide or thick to manage.

Planning out cement work can cross over different trades. So, the first thing we should ask ourselves is “what is this slab for”. Depending on what the slab will be the foundation for, will determine how much work will go into the slab. First, lets consider the different possible trades involved in concrete work. A sink needs plumbing, a light fixture needs electrical.cement-mixer-01

Ask yourself:

  • will I need electrical work added in this project
  • what about water supply lines and draining
  • will there be excessive weight on this, like a vehicle
  • do I need a footing, for sloped or uneven areas

When the project is to work with concrete, a lot of thought is needed. But, with the right plan and doing some research and some muscle, it can be done.

Concrete work now a days has really changed due to there is now a wide range of colors we can add to the mix for matching an area, stamping designs for the cement for that stone look or what ever pattern suites your needs.
