Knowing what type of roof you have and the type of roofing material on it makes any repair you are considering much more thorough. Some type of roofs do not have attics below them (vaulted ceilings) and may have several layers of different materials inside them like:

  • Finished wood as the inside ceiling (first layer applied)
  • Variety of support planks (usually Cris-crossed to support the ceiling)
  • Hard board fiber insulation

  • Plywood or OSB
  • Tar paper / felt paper
  • Finished roofing  material

The reason we mention this is that, you need to be aware of not using too long of fasteners that could protrude through the finished ceiling, (first layer applied) when repairing.

On a more pitched roof, the house more than likely has an attic and any fasteners that come through the bottom of the roof will not be seen except for in the attic, which is no big deal. But, with that said, be careful when in the attic that you don’t come in contact with an exposed nail or screw (ouch!)

Roofing materials come in a wide variety of  colors, styles, shapes and materials. You can have any style roof, in any part of the country but, keep in mind the elements you may deal with year in and year out. Some of roofing materials could include:

  • Asphalt composite (tabbed or rolled)
  • Tiled roof (ceramic)
  • Slate
  • Metal roofing (interlocking / panel)

The above roofing materials come a very wide variety of colors to match just about any taste, besides the tiled roof, which are limited to natural colors.
